Kit configuration
Here we will dive into the different types of BDK drum kits available today.
Rock kit
A rock-size drum kit includes a bass drum between 20” and 24” in diameter, a 14” snare drum, two rack toms between 10” and 13”, and a floor tom between 14” and 16”.
Typically, a standard rock setup is a five-piece kit, however, most rock drummers tend to expand this for their own custom setup.
Rock drum kits are ideal for heavy playing styles and are usually favourited by beginner drummers looking to emulate their drumming heroes.
Fusion kit
A fusion drum kit sits halfway between a jazz drum kit and a rock kit. The main difference that separates a fusion-size drum kit from others is the drum diameters.
It comes as either a 20” bass drum, 10” high tom, 12” mid tom, and a 14” floor tom or a 22” bass drum, 10” high tom, 12” mid tom, and a 14” floor tom.
Although fusion kits appeal to a wide audience, they tend to be quieter than rock-size kits – something to consider!
Jazz kit
Jazz drum kits come with a smaller-sized bass drum, which is often 18”. This compact design is ideal for tightly-packed venues and clubs, and it provides a wider tonal resonance thanks to its high tuning.
Founded in New Orleans African-American communities, jazz drum kits complement the double bass and other instruments typically found in jazz bands.
Often set up as a four-piece, jazz kits are lightweight and easy to transport for on-the-road drummers. They’re also usually set up with a slanted snare drum, which allows for easy playing with mallets and brushes for classical jazz percussion sound.
Quality
The premium-quality build of the latest BDK series provides exceptional rigidity and durability across all configurations.
Poplar wood
Constructed from poplar wood, the BDK series drum kits not only meet the demands of heavy-hitting drummers but also produce a warm, vibrant, and lively tone, from the snare to the floor tom.
With an apt name, poplar is amongst the most popular woods used in drum manufacturing. It’s favourited for its stand-out tonal qualities and second-to-none durability.
This wood is easy to source, so poplar kits are relatively affordable, making drumming accessible to everyone.
6-ply shell construction
The 6-ply shell construction assists the tone of poplar wood by boosting the volume and making every hit sound truly striking. These six layers are ideal for indoor and outdoor gigs as they significantly project volume for an awesome show.
Most beginner kits feature a thinner ply construction, however, BDK kits have been specifically designed with six plies in order to throw their powerful sound out to the crowd.
Hardware
The sturdy steel hardware and double-braced legs of the BDK kits keep everything perfectly in place. Depending on which kit you opt for, you’ll have either black or silver hardware, selected to complement the shell’s finish. My personal favourite is the BDK-20 Fusion Drum Kit. It’s white with black hardware – the ideal combination for a metalhead like myself.
Secured with grippy rubber feet, the stands stay glued to the floor, no matter how heavy you’re playing. It’s perfect for beginners to discover their sound without the risk of their kit wandering away from them.
Finishes
What’s a drum kit without a stylish finish? The BDK kits come in a wide range of colours that are a step up from most beginner kits. Each finish is attentive to detail, enticing you to pick up your sticks and master your skills, day in and day out.
The new BDK series comes in four stylish finishes, catering to every drummer’s liking.
Black
Who doesn’t fancy a gloss black drum kit? Its dark aesthetic is awesome under stage lighting, and it certainly looks the part for aspiring heavy drummers.
Complete with black hardware, it’s sure to grab your audience’s attention.
White
As mentioned earlier, the white finish is a personal favourite of mine. Paired with black hardware, it looks great on any stage, studio, or bedroom. The shimmering gloss truly makes the stand-out statement that any drummer is looking for.
Silver sparkle
There really couldn’t be any more sparkle to this stunning silver finish. It suits a wide range of genres and playing styles, making it a great go-to kit finish for beginners.
The addition of chrome hardware adds just that little bit of extra shine and glimmer to the kit. Just one glance and you’ll want to get some practice in!
Black oyster
The black oyster finish is the best of both worlds. It has dark features with a slight glimmer from the lighter colours, adding depth and a stunning overall aesthetic to your setup.
This is arguably one of the best finishes to ever be found on a beginner kit, especially at an affordable price! It’s definitely a brilliant foundation for your drumming career to develop over the years!
