M-Audio AIR Audio Interfaces: The Hidden Crystal (Preamp)

10/01/2023

The M-Audio AIR series is a range of audio interfaces that combines pristine audio quality, premium components, and an incredibly comprehensive software package to give you an unrivalled interface at an incredible price point.

An audio interface is crucial to anyone wanting to produce music. It’s the centrepiece of anyone’s setup, and yet it’s often the most overlooked component.

Given how saturated the interface market is, it’s easy to understand why you may turn to an affordable model or stick to a generic brand. But sometimes there are incredible diamonds that, undeservedly, go under the radar…

So, let’s dive into the M-Audio AIR series…

All-new Crystal preamps

The M-Audio Crystal preamps exceed all expectations of an affordable unit, delivering incredible clarity with best-in-class preamp noise, as displayed by Julian Krause.

What does that mean?

When you record using a low-level signal microphone, you’ll need to run the gain on the channel high or use an external Cloud Lifter or FetHead preamp to boost the signal. This is most common with mics like the industry standard Shure SM7B.

The AIR series, however, negates the need for an additional preamp. It has plenty of gain on tap with an incredibly low-noise floor, making your recordings as articulate as you’d expect from a high-end interface.

This is combined with a -93dB THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) reading, which means the signal and sound captured are incredibly clear, Crystal if you will!

There’s also a wide dynamic range and an incredibly flat frequency response, giving you professional studio-quality components in an affordable, metal-housed unit.

The range of AIR interfaces

The range starts with the M-Audio AIR 192 4, which has a humble 2-in/2-out interface (one combi-XLR Crystal Preamp and one instrument DI).

Next up, the AIR 192 6 boasts two Crystal Preamps, as well as 5-pin MIDI in and out!

The range goes all the way up to the AIR 192 14, which is an ideal diverse portable solution for any producer.

With a mammoth 8-in/4-out interface, you’ll be prepared for any recording situation.

There’s even an easy-start setup in the form of the M-Audio AIR 192 4 Vocal Studio. It features an AIR192 4 interface, a large diaphragm condenser microphone, and a pair of headphones.

The Vocal Studio is the ideal bundle for someone wanting to record their voice, start podcasting, or record instruments!

Software included!

If you’re a guitarist or bassist, you’ll enjoy the Peavey ReValver plugin that produces astonishing tones.

There are also 80 effects plugins from AIR and AIR’s Creative FX Collection.

And with the included AIR Virtual Instrument plugins, you’ll have virtual synth, strings, percussion, organ, and piano plugins to add world-class-sounding instruments to your songs with ease.
