There is a welcomed simplicity here, but that in no way inhibits what this pedal can do. It can be a beautiful clean boost that will add power to your signal. Just before the breakup, there is a big and bold clean tone which - combined with vintage single coils - will blow you away. You will start making your other overdrives jealous - it's harmonically massive, rich, and crunchy.
The asymmetrical clipping mode is the most familiar setting of the famous ‘green box’ but in the Plumes it features some great improvements. First of all, there is a much stronger signal processing which significantly improves clarity, chime, and overall output. Next, the tone control has also been tweaked, making it far more usable across the whole range - you get a tighter bass response that doesn’t impede on the midrange and the trebles. This mode perfects ‘80s classic rock, especially with anything loaded with P.A.Fs.
Earthquaker have a very open approach to how their pedals can be used and this is no exception. The Plumes uses a soft touch Flexi-Switch™ which allows for two distinctive modes. A familiar latching switch, so when you stomp on it, it stays on and without the annoying audible click. But it’s the momentary switch that’s clever. You can easily use it to articulate very fast passages by simply keeping your foot down and as soon as you lift your foot, the pedal disengages. So, if you are more experimentally inclined and like to jump around your pedals within a riff or phrase, this makes life a lot easier.
