To celebrate their 40th anniversary of pedal design and the support of their fans, Boss have created this special limited-edition commemorative box containing one-time-only reissues of the original 3 Boss pedals. Limited to only 1500 box sets worldwide, the reissue pedals are created the same way as the originals, in Japan with wiring and circuit adjustments all done by hand. Each component has been carefully selected to faithfully reproduce the sound, response, and feel of the originals, while subtle modern enhancements ensure they can work flawlessly in current rigs. These improvements include a PSA compatible power supply section, a protection circuit and noise filter, a reinforced battery snap, and an LED to show the effect’s on/off status.
The original Boss OD-1 introduced the concept of overdrive to the world, originally created to provide a more natural sound than typical fuzz units of the day. Designed with asymmetrical clipping circuits to produce tons of even-order harmonics, the pedal delivered a warm, pleasing tone like the natural breakup of a tube amp, but with a its own unique character and response. Offering an expressive touch, subtle mid boost, and a beautifully tight bass response, the OD-1 Overdrive is perfect for all types of musical styles. The reissue model is created with four op-amps, much like the original, while its diodes where carefully selected to reproduce the original response characteristics.
While there where many phase pedals available at the time, the engineers at Boss wanted to create a phaser with more clarity and a deeper modulation range. The PH-1 provided a more natural and mild sound than other phasers, producing a beautifully rich low-end response and featured an integrated output boost circuit to give it more power. The 40th anniversary reissue is constructed with FET’s for its four chase-shifting circuits, each carefully matched to deliver the original’s response characteristics. The pedal’s preset resistors have also been meticulously tuned by hand to replicate the same process the original went thought during its construction, delivering a truly classic tone and feel.
Boss’ SP-1 Spectrum is their most unique and rarest pedal available, created from the effect built into early Roland guitars and bass amps, and produced in limited numbers until 1981. The Spectrum pedal is essentially a single-band parametric equaliser with a fixed level boost, offering controls to sweep the centre frequency from 500Hz to 5kHz and adjust the mix of the direct and effected sound. Using the SP-1 with an electric guitar produces a wah-like sound set in a fixed position, with a focused boost at the centre frequency, while using it with a bass guitar helps it cut through mixes. The reissue’s individual preset resistors have been meticulously tuned by hand to deliver a fully accurate reproduction of the original Spectrums sound.
