The Telecaster’s body is crafted from lightweight alder, producing balanced, resonant tones with plenty of clarity and midrange bite ideal for the versatile musician. The alder tonewood provides a decent amount of sustain, creating bright, sizzling highs, beautifully rounded lows, and a beefy midrange. Fender have used alder as their tonewood of choice since the 1950s, as the balanced response and slight upper middle definition makes it perfect for rock and blues playing.
The addition of a maple neck provides the American Special Fender with a beautifully bright characteristic, tightening up the overall tonality and deliver plenty of cut, while its ‘’C’’ profile provides a comfortably smooth performance. The neck is coupled with a rosewood fingerboard to enhance the bass with warm, soft tones, and ‘fur up’ the maple's harsh edges for a sizzling high end and an open midrange attack. The rosewood’s naturally oily surface allows any stray overtones to be absorbed into the pours, offering this guitar with a natural fundamental tone, while the maple delivers a powerfully sharp punch when the strings are hit hard.
Loaded with two clear and dynamic Texas Special single coil pickups, the American Telecaster delivers a distinctive mid-range punch, sparkling highs, and focused bass response. Featuring an overwound single coil design, alnico 5 magnets, and staggered pole pieces, the Fender Texas Special pickups produce an array of professional tones ideal for a range of genres and playing styles.
The Fender Special Tele incorporates a unique Greasebucket Tone Circuit, which delivers a whole new style of tone shaping. Apposed to standard tone controls which simply reduce the high frequencies while leaving the bass frequencies more predominant, the Greasebucker tone circuit provides a high and low frequency roll off, allowing you to create unique and natural clean tones.
Featuring a carefully fitted synthetic bone nut, the American Special Telecaster delivers an increased resonance and bright tonality. When compared to traditional plastic and Tusq materials used to construct guitar nuts, synthetic bone improves the vibration transfer between the string and tuning machines without dampening the tone.
The rich history of Fender guitars begins with the Telecaster. An indispensable instrument, the Telecaster was the world's first successful solid-body electric guitar. Perfected after two years of development - and a name change or two - the Telecaster debuted in February 1951 and began its steady ascent towards the stage and studio. Ingeniously engineered with the ability to be heard both loud and clear, it was a marvel of simple design elegance and workhorse functionality. It is perhaps a fitting testimony to its essential original rightness that the Telecaster design has hardly changed ever since.
