The Gibson Dove features a sitka spruce top that delivers a broad dynamic range and crisp articulation. Spruce is the most commonly used wood for guitar tops as it generates a versatile sound and accommodates numerous playing styles, from aggressive to fingerpicking. The wood itself is quite elastic in nature, which resonates well whilst remaining strong, and provides a focused, clear sound of deep lows, warm midi-range, and bright sparkling highs. The brightly toned sitka spruce top is accompanied by flame maple back and sides which provide the Gibson Dove with a clear, crisp tone, with added warmth and superb sustain. Both tonewoods offer their own distinctive tonal character to the overall sound of the Gibson Dove and the sound delivered is perfect for professional performance.
Constructed from maple, the Gibson Dove's neck contributes tightness to the overall tonality, and offers a durable and stable construction. The maple neck provides players with a hint of sizzle in the highs, firm rounded lows, bright tonal characteristics, lots of bite and plenty of sustain. Although maple is a brightly toned piece of timber, its the mids that tend to have a snappier attack with a punchy, slight gnarly edge when driven with hard pick attack, and excellent clarity with light to medium fingerpicking techniques. This smooth playing maple neck is topped with a rosewood fingerboard that projects a warm, bright, sparkly tonality which really shines through when using fingerpicking techniques. Its smooth fingerboard also offers an energetic play and is sprinkled with split parallelogram mother of pearl inlays for added elegance.
The Gibson Dove features a square shoulder body shape which provides players with superb projection and overall tonal balance. The big body is better suited to players with a longer reach and those more comfortable with the dreadnought size. The sheer volume the Dove can project makes it ideal for the singer/songwriter, as vocalists can really push their diaphragm to the max and not feel too loud against the guitar's volume, as it will sing as loud as you do. Its square shoulders offer a bit more volume, extra warmth, tonal balance, and a boomy voice that can handle many styles of play.
The Gibson Dove comes equipped with the popular VTC pickup from L.R. Baggs, which features a low-profile undersaddle pickup that's proven more stable and durable than many standard ribbon-type pickups. Combined with an unobtrusive and removable volume/tone control mounted just within the soundhole, the VTC and the Dove together provide the idyllic setup for the professional musician. The VTC features rotary controls for both volume and tone shaping, and is designed to project the rich sonic character that you'd expect from a mic'd up performance in a studio environment.
The Gibson Dove offers a truly beautiful appearance and is finished with high-end decorative features for an elegant look that is certainly ready for the hands of professional musicians. These decorative features include split parallelogram fingerboard markers and a rosewood dove-wing bridge, both of which are inlaid in the gorgeously glistening mother of pearl. To add to the Gibson Dove's aesthetically pleasing look, it features a truly stunning hand-painted pickguard. The pickguard graces the sitka spruce top with elegance, and offers a high-end finish to superb design and high-quality construction. Other ornate details include an antique cherry stain over flame maple back and sides, chrome hardware, grover tuners, and classic Gibson headstock.
As with many of Gibson's acoustic range, the Gibson Dove features traditional hand scalloped X-bracing. This specific type of bracing structure consists of two braces forming an 'X' shape across the soundboard which not only enhances the sound and offers a well-balanced tone, but also provides a reinforced stable and durable structure.
