The 355 is drenched in history – a lineage that goes back more than six decades. From being the very first semi hollow instrument, Gibson have refined themselves over all these years and produced something that will sadly only be available in limited numbers. From originally solving the simple problem of electric archtop guitars abhorrent microphonic feedback, the 355 has become an icon not only in the hands of Jazz and Blues legends but of contemporary Rock and Punk bands – Its exactly this kind of diversity that allows a history of this length to exist for an instrument.

Gibson MHS Humbuckers

Articulate, clear, warm, and responsive. The MHS humbuckers are a perfect pairing, allowing the guitar to sing for you when you decide you don’t want to. Matched to the original PAFs of the ‘50s, expect true vintage tones to emanate out of your amplifier. The lower output of MHS humbucker means you can drive your amplifier a little harder, allowing your power tubes to run hotter allowing richer and more complex harmonic overtones.

Touch Sensitive Feedback

Ted McCarty from Gibson decided, very cleverly to add a centre block, making feedback controllable. Thermal treated maple not only reduces feedback effectively but, being harder brightens everything up a touch. Although not all feedback is bad, some of it is in fact beautiful. The 355 is incredibly responsive. Meaning, even an adjustment of pressure on the body will start to influence the many variables of feedback. Tone, pitch, and amplitude manipulation is a matter of discipline, learning this makes the guitar feel like another instrument entirely - It’s like dancing with noise.

A bandsaw is the only piece of machinery that is used for the neck. It is pure skill in the hands and eyes of the workers that make these necks feel beautiful. The bodies and bindings on the 355 are worked and finished by hand with the use of tools and very few machines. Prestige

BB King’s main instrument for many years was the Gibson 355. Lovingly known as ‘Lucille’, it was named after a bar fight induced fire caused a venue to burn up. BB King discovered it was over a woman of the same name.

Chuck Berry famously influenced Keith Richards. When Richards saw ‘Johnny B. Goode’ performed live he recalls - “It knocked me out” - legends inspire legends. Today, Dave Grohl and Tom Delonge have signature model 355s, introducing new guitarists to this icon.
