The Gibson BFG Humbucker is constructed with a mahogany body and a maple top. This is a classic combination that has been utilised for years due to its combination of mahogany's warmth, resonance, sustain, alongside maple's bright overtones. The body has undergone Gibson's Ultra-Modern Weight Relief to improve its resonance while reducing its weight. This is achieved by creating chambers inside the guitar, giving you a much more comfortable instrument to play over extended periods.
The BFG has a mahogany neck that is glued into the body for enhanced resonance and sustain. Mahogany also helps provide a stable platform to guarantee tuning stability over longer playing sessions. The neck is topped with a torrified grendillo fingerboard. Grenadillo is a straight-grained, dense wood from Cuba known as "the wood that sings". It has a similar look and sound to rosewood, with a slightly more orange hue and brighter tone. Torrification is a heat-treatment process which removes impurities and helps create a more stable wood for enhanced tuning stability and sustain.
The BFG is coated in a stunning Worn Ebony finish. This gives it a real stand-out aesthetic with subtle signs of ageing for a more 'organic' look. The neck is finished in satin which provides a smooth and tactile playing surface, while the Tumbled Chrome hardware helps create a sleek aesthetic. It's not all style-over-substance though - the chrome hardware also delivers its primary function of giving reliable tuning stability, accurate setup adjustments and optimal string vibration transfer; this is achieved with a Tune-O-Matic Bridge, Stop Bar tailpiece and vintage-style tuners.
The BFG has a satin-finished neck for a smooth playing feel when traversing the fingerboard. The neck has a comfortable rounded-profile that sits confidently in the left hand, while the 24.75'' scale length and 12'' radius gives the classic 'Gibson' feel, enabling easy string bends and a low-action setup. The 22 frets are cryogenically treated and have a low profile for effortless slides up and down the neck. The classic Les Paul single cutaway enables easy access to the top frets, so you'll have no problems soloing at the "dusty end" of the guitar.
A dual humbucker arrangement gives you access to biting bridge-position sounds, along with mellow neck-position tones. Each pickup has its own volume and tone control, giving you full control over your sound. The 3-way pickup selector gives the option of using the pickups individually or combined, and means you'll be able to create almost any sound for any genre, including mellow clean sounds, biting blues tones, driven rock rhythms, saturated lead tones, and much more. This electronic arrangement has been used by Gibson and countless imitators for its incredible versatility and is partly the reason why the Les Paul has found its way into all genres of music.
