John Lennon was a singer, songwriter and member of The Beatles. His lyrics spoke to millions worldwide, and his critical success is untouchable. He was also an advocate for peace and pushed forward the beliefs of friendship in a period full of tension and war. John Lennon's songs continue to inspire generations of people, and Martin's tribute guitar celebrates the man in what would have been his 75th year.
Martin’s aim is to produce guitars to last a lifetime, whether that be in live, studio, or home use. The custom D-28 celebrates the life of Lennon, and Martin use their craftsmanship techniques to produce an accurate recreation of his original. The Adirondack top Martin has been made using their VTS method to age it back to the late 60s/early 70s. It has a clear tone, with strong volume. The Ebony fingerboard and bridge bring defined notes, as well as being a stunning dark colour. Martin have committed to producing the finest woods that accurately represent the guitar as it was when he owned one, as well has having decorative edges to celebrate his life.
Strikingly intricate inlays are present on multiple features of John Lennon’s signature D-28. The neck has four separate inlays, each representing a different aspect to Lennon’s song writing. The rosette features multiple signature inlays of a peace symbol, the pickguard has a large sun inlay, and the headstock has his famous sketched self portrait. All of these features are in Martin’s ‘Mother of Pearl’ style. There’s also a peace sign engrained on the back of the D-28. These fine details and designs are a classy, smart and well thought tribute to John Lennon’s life and work.
Martin’s new Vintage Tone System (VTS) takes new woods back to their roots. It’s common knowledge that old guitars’ wood sounds warmer, more resonant, and have an all round better sound. Using the torrefaction method, the wood begins to effectively ‘age’ at a high heat, so Martin have been able to give woods a tone replicating the sound of a guitar far older. By refining this method, Martin have been able to take their guitars back to a specific decade, whilst retaining the strength and reliability of a brand new product.
