The Z.Vex '59 Sound Pedal is based on a classic guitar amplifier that inspired a germination of rock music, the Fender Bassman. When cranked, this amplifier has a unique saturation with great dynamic range and response to guitar input. The '59 imitates this tonal signature and effectively gives you a Bassman tone in a small box.
For such a tiny unit, the '59 Sound pedal gives a surprising amount of control over your sound. It lets you tailor your exact gain and volume level, along with a master tone dial for overall tonal output changes. The '59 Sound also has a footswitch boost that can provide a handy volume jump for solos, or be used to push your amp harder for increased saturation. This pedal is highly responsive and will clean up nicely when you roll back your guitar volume; this gives it a very musical feel.
The Fender Bassman from 1959 was a classic amp design and fore-runner in guitar overdrive tones. In England, Jim Marshall based his classic JTM 45 amplifier on a modified Bassman circuit. Z.Vex previously had a pedal (the Box Of Rock) imitating the JTM 45 and they decided to reverse engineer this pedal to imitate the Bassman amplifier. Both pedals feature the same compact chassis and musical response, but the '59 Sound pedal delivers American dynamic tones, as opposed to the British version of that same sound.
