The vintage RD profile was first conceived in the 70's as a 'research and development' series of guitars and basses, designed with cutting edge electronics and classic styles to push the boundaries of guitar making. With its unique shape and smooth contours, the RD design offers an incredibly comfortable playing experience while ensuring it stands out on stage. The body is crafted from solid mahogany, with a maple top and finished in Lee's favourite walnut finish to create a stunning guitar with incredible tonal characteristics. The mahogany/maple combination delivers beautifully warm, soft tones with a smooth brightness which helps create incredible dynamics.
In addition to the body woods, this limited edition Lee Malia guitar also features a mahogany neck in a 1959 round ''C'' profile, offering comfortable and flexible hand movement across the whole neck. The mahogany tonewood enhances the guitar's natural warm, adding a mellow characteristic that pairs well with the brightness of the maple top. The addition of a torrified composite fingerboard helps create a complex high end, with thick lows, and excellent presence in the midrange.
Tune-O-Matic bridges are an extremely popular fixed bridge type due to their stability, reliability, comfortable playing position and impressive sustain. Unlike other systems that require tools to adjust and remove, the new LockTone bridge automatically locks the tune-o-matic and the stopbar onto their posts for added security and improved sustain. Overall, this modern innovation will provide optimum reliability and ease-of-play, perfect for gigging musicians.
Lee Malia is renowned for his distinctive tone, opting for a combination of Gibson's USA p-94 single-coil and USA 84T-LM humbucker on the RD Custom Artisan Outfit. The P-94 is located in the neck position and offers more sustain and output than a traditional single coil pickup, but with deeper lows, a growling midrange, and sizzling highs. The 84T-LM bridge humbucker has been especially designed for Lee Malia to deliver excellent gain and powerful mids, perfect for playing leads and main riffs. The bridge humbucker also feature a coil-splitting function on its volume pot, allowing players to switch between humbucking and single-coil tones. In addition, a ''dummy coil'' is incorporated into the body to help cancel out the undesirable ''hum'' when switching the guitar to single coil mode.
Lee Malia is best known as the guitarist of 'Bring me the Horizon'. Originating from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, this 5-piece rock group formed in 2004 and have been a success ever since. This limited edition guitar was designed in collaboration with Lee, and built to his exact specifications.
