The JS2480 is a modern guitar that provides the versatile and futuristic sounds of Joe Satriani. Alongside the incredibly dexterous instrumental rock style, Joe also has a strong blues influence behind his pioneering instrumental sound and his solo music has a delicate nuance at times with subtle 'bluesy' phrasing. Joe's work with Chickenfoot also reveals his blues/rock inspiration, featuring simple grooves combined with an incredible soloing prowess.
As such, Joe requires a guitar with a modern yet nuanced tonality, alongside a smooth playing-feel with a slightly more vintage-vibe. The JS2480 provides the ideal balance between modern 'shred' guitars and a vintage-inspired playing feel. The JS2480's Sustainiac neck-pickup adds the ability to explore the sound of infinite sustain, greatly expanding the potential of this guitar.
To create a smooth and effortless playing feel, the JS2480 has 24 frets with the Ibanez Prestige Fret-Edge Treatment for an incredibly smooth response. The all-access joint and deep cutaway of the body allows unlimited access to the top-frets and ensures you can perform the most complex of techniques with as few barriers as possible.
To create a more classic feel with these specifications, the frets are medium sized - unlike the classic super-jumbo sizes of shred/metal guitars. The fingerboard has a 250mm radius creating a relatively flat surface which enables comfortable soloing and chordal work. This radius isn't as flat as other shred guitars and still creates a subtle rounded surface for a more "classic" guitar feel.
The neck, whilst slim, still has a comfortable profile and takes up more room in the hand than Ibanez's Wizard necks; this provides a more confident hold and enhanced sustain.
The Basswood body creates a lightweight instrument that is comfortable for use over long periods. Basswood is also tonally versatile, with a bright and resonant edge that helps you cut through the mix. The neck is crafted from maple and bubinga in 3 pieces, giving enhanced strength and resonance. A rosewood fingerboard enhances low-end articulation and ensures your playing will have a fast pick-attack.
The DiMarzio Satchur8 bridge humbucker is Joe's go-to pickup and offers a hot output with great clarity and dynamics. It allows harmonics to jump out with ease and creates strong string-separation with great articulation.
The Sustainiac neck pickup operates like a classic neck-position coil, giving a warm and mellow sound for smooth leads and chords. When you engage the Sustainiac preamp, the neck pickup creates infinite sustain and opens the door to a world of sonic potential. The pickup can operate in three different modes, letting you achieve standard sustain effects and octave harmonic effects.
The pickups are wired with a high-pass filter, activated by the push-pull volume control. This filter gives your riffs and solos an extra edge to stand out in the mix. The tone control acts as a push-pull Sustainiac on/off switch so you can access the infinite sustain effect at the push of a button.
The JS2480 is loaded with a time-proven Edge tremolo double locking tremolo system. Joe Satriani is known for his bombastic use of the whammy bar, and he needs the ultimate system to give a smooth action and to guarantee accurate tuning. This system is equipped with a light weight tremolo arm for an enhanced feel.
