In 2017 Laney reissued the LA100BL as a celebration of 50 years of business. This original 100BL was the first amplifier used by Tony Iommi on the debut Black Sabbath album. Tony pushed the front-end with an Arbiter Dallas Rangemaster to create the saturation that he needed, and there the sound of heavy metal was born.
Laney reissued the LA100BL to coincide with Black Sabbath's final tour – a rather poetic ending to the band's long career, with the same amp featuring at both the beginning and the end of the band's long touring-life. This 100-watt behemoth had a wide and open sound that was perfect for large stages in the '60s, where it could push a huge amount of air when PA systems weren't adequate for mic'ing up a guitar amp. The 30-watt Black Country Customs LA30BL Head is a lower-powered version of this same design, giving guitarists access to the same tones at a more manageable volume level. The amplifier was conceived in the '60s but never released – today it has finally found its place.
The Black Country Customs Bundle is a re-creation of the original rig that Tony Iommi used to create the sound of heavy metal. This bundle includes an LA30BL head, LA212 cab, and the TI Booster used to provide the boosted sound that Iommi required for his more saturated tones.
Bundle Includes:
A 30-watt valve amp allows you to push the power amp tubes for glorious saturation, whilst still maintaining sensible volume levels for smaller venues and rehearsals. The Black Country Customs LA30BL Head has 12AX7 preamp tubes feeding EL34 power tubes for a true 'British-style' sound. It has the same preamp as the larger LA100BL for the same tonality, which is very open and uncompressed. This makes it ideal for use with a pedalboard – it is quite a clean amp that responds fantastically to boosts and overdrives, with a smooth and warm breakup for a true vintage sound.
The Black Country Customs LA30BL Head has a simple 3-band EQ with presence control. It has multiple inputs (Treble and Bass) for different flavours of overdrive. The amp is hand-made in the 'old fashioned' way, with turret boards and hand-populated PCBs. If you're seeking a true vintage response and user-experience, this is it.
The LA212 cabinet is a smaller version of the LA412 50-year anniversary speaker cabinet, based on Tony Iommi's first amplifier and cabinet combination. This 2 x 12 cabinet provides a vintage response and a warm sound that perfectly captures the sound of early heavy metal and other '60s musical genres. The Celestion G12M-25 Greenback speaker was chosen for its warm tones and its slightly-smaller alnico magnets. The speakers are mounted in an offset configuration for maximum vertical and horizontal projection, giving you a similar sound to a full 4 x 12 cabinet but without the additional weight.
The LA212 is hand-made and features marine-grade birch ply. It uses vintage construction methods and is built to last on the road, with its rugged handles and castor wheels. The cabinet is a replication of the original '60s models and has an effortlessly cool aesthetic that will look great on stage, especially if paired with the Black Country Customs LA30BL. If you need maximum projection and versatile tones, this cabinet is the ideal choice.
The Laney TI Boost pedal is based on the Dallas Arbiter Rangemaster pedal, first used by Iommi to push his amp into increased saturation and create a sound never heard by previous players. Tony's Rangemaster was modified by a Cumbrian guitar player and has been re-created in the TI Boost, with a significant bass cut and mid boost, alongside more gain and more EQ options. This is the ideal partnership for the vintage-style LA30BL amp, letting you push the front-end and achieve those same drive tones.
