Aerodrums uses a subset of the Natural Drum Kit sample library so the sounds are high quality and expressive. Aerodrums supports 16 levels of openness for the hi-hats and uses as many as 58 different sound samples for a given openness level, per hand. Aerodrums uses different samples as well for the dominant and non-dominant hand.
You can point Aerodrums to your own sample collections and you can also output MIDI notes as you drum enabling you to trigger any MIDI-compatible sampler or VST as well as record straight into your favourite DAW.
Most drummers can play Aerodrums with the same finesse and speed they play regular kits with. There are some techniques that players develop such as letting the butt of the stick collide with the palm of your hand that help provide similar sensations to normal drums if that's what you're used to.
The Aerodrums system can effectively measure the speed of your feet and sticks allowing for everything from soft ghost notes to your heaviest beats. The full range of MIDI note velocities and continuous controller data is used. Unlike electric drums, Aerodrums can even tell which hand you are using to hit with and triggers different samples to match.
The Aerodrums sticks are fitted with reflective tips and you attached elastic reflectors to your feet. A bright light shines on you whilst a high-speed camera tracks the motion of these markers and determines the triggers.
You are free to use the preset kits, use your own samples and configure the set-up by hitting the air at each desired location. Because the light used is quite bright we have included some paper sunglasses so you can play with more comfort - although you might want to replace these for your own! After a while, you probably won't need to look at the screen so the light won't matter as much.
