When it was released to an unsuspecting public in 1958 as part of the Gibson's Modernist Series, players of the day just couldn't handle it, and very few late-'50s Explorers were produced. Fast-forward to the 70s and 80s, and the revived Explorer quickly re-established itself as one of the most iconic electric guitars of the rock and metal scenes. Tommy Thayer’s signature model is crafted from mahogany and features a stunning metallic white finish, adding a visually stunning aesthetic to an already iconic design.
The Signature Explorer is also equipped with a stunning mahogany neck and torrified composite fingerboard, helping expand the body’s rich tonal properties with extra focus and warmth. The neck provides an incredibly focused midrange for a thick, meaty mid-section, while the addition of torrified composite helps create a complex high-end, with a beautifully thick low-end.
Its classic 1960s SlimTaper neck profile is designed with a comfortable ‘’D’’ shape, providing incredible comfort for an enhanced performance. Originally introduced and made famous by many 1960s era, Kalamazoo-made, Gibson and Epiphone guitars, the profile is designed with the perfect thickness for a stable neck and a comfortably, speedy performance.
Seymour Duncan JB humbucking pickups are great for everything from heavy blues to heavy metal, and the Tommy Thayer signature explorer features two of these outstanding pickups to deliver the ultimate performance. While the neck pickup features chrome mounting rings, the bridge pickup features an open-coil JB Humbucker with white bobbins to create a visually stunning aesthetic. Use the volume and tone controls to dial in a range of powerful tones, and flick between the two pickups with the toggle switch for an incredibly versatile performance.
Tune-O-Matic bridges are an extremely popular fixed bridge type due to their stability, reliability, comfortable playing position, and impressive sustain. Unlike other systems that require tools to adjust and remove, the LockTone bridge automatically locks the tune-o-matic and the stopbar onto their posts for added security and improved sustain. Overall, this modern innovation will provide optimum reliability and ease-of-play, perfect for gigging musicians.
Born November 1960, Thomas Cunningham Thayer is an American musician and songwriter best known for his work as the lead guitarist of Kiss. Thayer was born into a musical family, and his passion for 70’s rock bands lead him to pick up his first electric guitar at 13. While he played in many bands through his early years, it was when he created the band Black ‘n Blue, did Thayer’s life to rock and roll legend truly begin. With his Success in Black ‘n Blue, which lead to the band being inducted into the Oregan Music Hall of Fame, Tommy went on to begin co-writing songs with Gene Simmons and played session guitar on song demos for Kiss’ 1989 release, Hot in the Shade. Soon after Tommy was invited to work with Kiss in 1994, and in 2002 became the lead guitarist known as The Spaceman.
