The Epiphone SG is a guitar which you'll almost certainly recognise. Gibson SGs have been used by the likes of Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend and many, many more. And Epiphone's version is identical in looks. From the sharp horns to the four-dial control layout, they have an iconic aesthetic which is synonymous with some of the best rock and hard rock acts of the last few decades.
One of the main differences, though, is the price. Epiphone SGs are much more affordable than their Gibson counterparts, and yet they still deliver a superbly high standard of playability, as well as the legendary dual humbucker or P90 pickup tones. These are also some of the sleekest guitars around, which makes them really easy to handle, and also easy on the back, too! After all, they have always been aimed at the hard rock genre, so they're designed to handle being thrown about a bit.
Other notable features include a symmetrical double cutaway shape for reaching the higher frets, uniquely shaped pickguards, suave Epiphone headstocks, and mahogany bodies. These are classic guitars which are made for the modern musician, suited to stage, studio, and bedroom. There's plenty of professionals, like Matt Heafy, who use them for professional shows - testament to their quality!
Epiphone SG stands for Epiphone Solid Guitar. When these models were first introduced by Gibson in 1961, they also sported the Les Paul moniker, but his name was subsequently removed in 1963 once his contract expired (he also wasn't a fan of the design either).
The Epiphone SG guitar is renowned for its warm and punchy tone, with a pronounced midrange thanks to its solid mahogany body and neck and dual humbucker pickups. This makes it great for hard rock and classic metal, as it handles distortion and aggressive playing extremely well.
The Epiphone SG is easy to play. Thanks to its really slim body and contours, it easily fits around you. Its sleekness also makes it lightweight, whilst the neck and fretboard are designed for fast, fluid movements. This is partly what attracted so many iconic players.
