The Mandolin evolved from the lute in Italy during the 17th and 18th century. Before this though, single stringer instruments have been seen in cave paintings and murals and this is generally agreed to be where stringed instruments such as the Mandolin originate from.
In more modern times the Mandolin has appeared on a number of popular songs including Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' and 'Maggie May' by Rod Stewart and is also popular with Led Zeppelin bassist, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend of The Who.
