Gibson Firebird guitars are simply iconic. Arriving onto the scene in 1963 thanks to the talented Ray Deitrich (known as a car designer at the time!), the Firebird was a revolutionary addition to Gibson's family of electric guitars. Its unique, offset design simply oozes cool, and combined with a reverse headstock and mini-humbucking pickups, it delivers a sound that's hard to resist.
Its slender curves contrast the Gibson Explorer's sharp and angular feel, and are somewhat reminiscent of the automobiles Deitrich also designed. This car likeness extends beyond just looks though, because a pair of mini-humbuckers deliver plenty of thunderous roars and growls - but with plenty of top end too!
Originally fitted with humbuckers, the Firebird was switched to minis in '65 after the company decided on a brighter, more focused sound. As a result, the Firebird found a unique place in a crowded market, offering a sound that's both punchy and powerful, but with plenty of definition for articulate playing.
From Neil Young to Eric Clapton, notable guitarists have flocked to the Firebird, drawn by its versatility and unmistakable style. And it's not just the pros who appreciate this guitar - anyone can enjoy the feel, playability, and rich tonality of this rock and roll icon.
Whether you're into blues, rock, country, or anything in between, the Firebird has the ability to truly set your music apart from the crowd. So don't just settle for a run-of-the-mill guitar - make a statement with the incomparable Gibson Firebird.
Gibson is still making the Firebird. This iconic electric guitar has been a favourite among musicians for decades and is still manufactured by Gibson to this day. With its distinctive design and rich, versatile sound, the Firebird remains a go-to for guitarists of all genres.
The Gibson Firebird is good for players that need a versatile sound and performance. This is due to its mini-humbucker pickups that provide a brighter, more focused sound than traditional humbuckers, making it well-suited for rock, blues, and indie, as well as heavier styles like hard rock and metal.
Many notable guitarists have played the Gibson Firebird over the years. Among them are Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton, Otis Rush, Allen Collins, and Dave Grohl, to name just a few. The Firebird's unique look and rich, versatile sound continue to make it a popular choice for guitarists.
