About Gibson Firebird Guitars
Gibson Firebird guitars are simply iconic. Arriving onto the scene in 1963 thanks to the talented Ray Deitrich (known as a car designer at the time!), the Firebird was a revolutionary addition to Gibson's family of electric guitars. Its unique, offset design simply oozes cool, and combined with a reverse headstock and mini-humbucking pickups, it delivers a sound that's hard to resist.
Its slender curves contrast the Gibson Explorer's sharp and angular feel, and are somewhat reminiscent of the automobiles Deitrich also designed. This car likeness extends beyond just looks though, because a pair of mini-humbuckers deliver plenty of thunderous roars and growls - but with plenty of top end too!
Originally fitted with humbuckers, the Firebird was switched to minis in '65 after the company decided on a brighter, more focused sound. As a result, the Firebird found a unique place in a crowded market, offering a sound that's both punchy and powerful, but with plenty of definition for articulate playing.
