For incredible projection, the Fillmore FL-50 Combo is loaded with a Celestion Custom 90 Black Shadow speaker. This speaker is often used in open-back cabinets as it has a thick and full low end that will project your sound beautifully. With a focused top-end, superb clarity and dynamic response, the Mesa Boogie Fillmore Combo will produce a great tone that suits many styles.
There are two identical channels on-board the Fillmore 50 Combo, which provide players of all styles with excellent versatility. The channels are also foot-switchable, and they each feature three vintage voices for you to play around with and explore. The modes include Clean, Drive and Hi which cover a whole array of different tonal combinations. Clean mode delivers bright and pristine tones, which can be clipped and saturated to create a smoother performance.
Drive mode has a balanced tone that is generally in the middle of the other two modes. It yields a focused top-end that allows rich harmonics to come through, and adds good dynamics. Finally, Hi features a wide range of saturated tones and has an overall warm, rounded tone. It is reminiscent of those classic 70s/80s crunch tones that were created by the popular British amps that shaped the era.
Each of the channels have their own set of independent controls, these controls include Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, Presence, Reverb and Master.
Gain can be used to completely change the personality of the different modes, as it ranges from bright and light, to warm and dynamic, to high saturation and fat tones. Treble can be used for shaping the channel's overall character and tone colouration. It delivers a balanced and bright tone when set in the middle, and you can discover an array of tonal possibilities by playing around with the Treble amount.
Mid offers a range of mid-range frequencies that are punchy and will cut through the mix. When in Clean mode, a low Mid setting will let the high harmonics ring out with sparkle. Whilst the middle section has good presence with excellent cut and definition, and the higher Mid section works well with a higher bass setting to create a rich and aggressive effect.
Bass blends a full and rich low end for a well-rounded sound, that varies between the different modes. In Clean mode, the bass mixes well with the warmth yet it is not over-powering, whereas in Drive and Hi modes Bass has a tighter and more resonant effect. The Presence knob adjusts higher frequencies than the Treble, and it lets you compress or open up the amp's tones. Ultimately, this control lets you decide just how dynamic and harmonic the Fillmore amp is.
Reverb lets you choose from a subtle, ambient effect to intense reverberation. The Fillmore FL-50 features an analog all-tube spring reverb circuit, that helps to add another dimension to your sound. Master is for making adjustments to the overall output of each mode and channel, and you can balance the volume levels. Master also works as an Effects Send control for the on-board effects loop.
