Renowned for its bold, full-range sound and up-front, honest midrange, the Thunderbolt covers a remarkable spectrum of vintage tone while wringing every ounce of personality from whatever guitar is plugged in. From clean jazz to Tele twang, soapbar blues to humbucker grind, the Thunderbolt dishes out 35 Watts of 'Class A' tube tone from its vintage Supro dual 6L6 power plant.
True to the '64 version of the Thunderbolt, a 5U4 rectifier tube is employed to deliver that unmistakable high-powered vintage sag. Normal and Extra hot input options, combined with a wide range of available gain on tap, allow you to fine-tune the texture and response of this amp's massive sound. Turned all the way up, the Thunderbolt exhibits nearly zero self-noise; yet it puts out enough volume to be easily heard on large venue and theatre stages, with overdrive completely controlled by the guitar's volume knob.
Massive custom transformers and lightweight, vintage-correct cabinetry - combined with the best-sounding 15" guitar speaker money can buy - put the Thunderbolt in a class of its own. With the amp turned all the way up, chords ring with exceptional clarity and definition, amidst copious amounts of tube overdrive and output-stage saturation. Available once again in all its bonafide Supro glory, the Thunderbolt returns in style.
In an effort to recreate the musical glory of the original Supro amplifiers, we have partnered with Eminence to bring you a series of USA-made speakers unlike anything else available today. Using a recipe that includes an edge-wound voice coil, ceramic magnet and lightweight stiff paper cone, the custom speakers found in Supro amplifiers deliver vintage American tone, with far more power handling, superior efficiency and nice firm bottom end.
Supro's "Thunderbolt" was marketed as a bass amplifier. Despite this original intention, the Thunderbolt has been recognized as one of the greatest guitar combo amps ever made, and has long been associated with Jimi Hendrix.
Jimi played a Supro Thunderbolt early in his career while touring with acts like Little Richard, The Isley Brothers and Ike Turner. It has also been said that Hendrix used a Supro Thunderbolt to record his original hit single, Hey Joe. It's no surprise the Thunderbolt found favour with Hendrix; its robust headroom for the time, fat-sounding 15" speaker and resonant open-back cabinet are perfectly suited to the slippery rhythm guitar style Jimi used in this R&B context.
Cranked all the way up, this combo brings the legendary Supro overdrive tone to life at a volume level suited to large club stages.
