The Make Noise Phongene is inspired by tape recorders of the past, utilising the same flexibility as older tape recorders, housed in a compact Eurorack module. The Phonogene Tape Recorder Module features new and improved rev. 372 firmware, with an improved algorithm for optimal audio performance and quality. The digital audio buffer is ideal for modular synthesis, providing voltage control over every parameter for added flexibility. The Phonogene allows you to record sounds on the fly, as well as layer sounds using the internal Sound On Sound control.
Once you have recorded your sounds into the module you can then proceed to chop it up into pieces, acting like a sampler. You can do this by using the Splice control. Once you have chopped up your sounds you can then rearrange the pieces using the Organize control. You can generate an infinite amount of variations, by modulating the Organize parameter. This gives you full control over every aspect of your sounds, virtually acting as a modular sampler.
The Phonogene includes a wide variety of in-depth controls including the Vari-Speed parameter; allowing you to modulate the speed and direction of playback with a signal control signal. Other controls include: Gene-Size, Gene-Shift and Slide, allowing you to take full control and granulise your recorded sound. You can do everything from stutter sounds to make them slide between each other, allowing you to generate highly unique rearrangements.
Inspired by the original Phonogene instrument from composer Pierre Schaeffer, the module version utilises a circuitboard-like design for quick and easy access. The firmware was engineered by Tom Erbe and Flemming Christensen using years of audio and modular expertise. The precise rotary controls are annotated to different patch points, providing helpful patching suggestions. The faceplate is sleek and stylish with a range of patch points for in-depth modulation. It only requires 20HP of space in a modular rack.
