Jazz drum kits come with a smaller-sized bass drum, often 18'', this compact design is ideal for tightly-packed venues and clubs and also provides a wider tonal resonance thanks to its high tuning. Founded in New Orleans African-American communities, jazz drum kits complement the double bass amongst other instruments typically found in jazz bands.
Often set up as a four-piece, jazz kits are lightweight and easy to transport for on-the-road drummers. They are also usually set-up with a slanted snare drum, this allows for easy playing with mallets and brushes for the classical jazz percussion sound.
