There are many tonal and creative benefits to the removal of frets from a traditional bass neck, as your pitch is completely fluid, which allows you to pitch bend an slide up and down the fretboard with physical ease.
It also allows for a more comfortable performance, as much less pressure needs to be applied by your fingers on the neck when you're playing. You can move freely across the board with no restrictions. What's more, if you find yourself slightly out of tune during a song, simply slide your finger up or down slightly to correct the tuning.
