You don't always have matching connections for your production gear. This is where the Bidirectional converter is perfect. It not only converts SDI to HDMI but goes the other way, converting HDMI to SDI too.
As well as this it supports camera protocol conversion. Put simply, this allows you to use HDMI cameras with SDI production switchers, and vice versa. Because of this, you can integrate previously incompatible gear into your production workflow, losing none of the functionality you'd get with matching formats.
