Input section
At the far left of the AuroraDSP Mammoth plug-in, you'll find the input section, which serves as the starting point for your bass signal processing. The settings in this section significantly influence how the rest of the plug-in functions and responds to your bass input.
The uppermost Gain control dial in the input section allows you to boost your bass signal's strength if it's too weak or low. By increasing the gain, you ensure an optimal signal level entering the plug-in.
Next, the XOVER dial enables you to choose the frequency at which your bass signal is divided into high and low bands. For instance, selecting a 200Hz crossover point assigns frequencies below 200Hz to the "Low" band and those above 200Hz to the "High" band. The low band frequencies are compressed for a clean, powerful low end, while the high band frequencies are processed for distortion and shaping in subsequent sections of the plug-in.
Preamp and Drive
Within the Mammoth plug-in, you have access to three distinct built-in preamps to tailor your bass sound. The available circuits include Red (modelled after the V4 head), Purple (inspired by the AC30 head) and Blue (reminiscent of the B7k preamp). Each offers a different gain range from more clean and textured to gritty and then assaulting distortion.
Using the Drive controls, this section allows you to further refine your bass tone's overall character. Further tweaking of the Drive character can be adjusted with the Top End Drive featuring three unique built-in preamps, this dial enables you to fine-tune your bass guitar's higher frequencies.
Crucial to bass guitar processing, the built-in bass maximizer is managed with this dial, granting you full command over your signal's low end. Utilize this control to boost and compress your bass guitar's lower frequencies for a richer sound.
The heart of the amplifier
In traditional format, Mammoth includes a three-band EQ of Low (100Hz), Mid (500Hz) and High (1,600Hz). What separates Mammoth is that there are two different tone stacks available to select between. MELT creates a more subdued, warm tone whereas utilising the BRUTE tonestack is transparent but highly aggressive for heavier downtuned performances.
Additionally found in the Tonestack section, the "HOT" button adds yet even more gain to your signal. This can be utilised to add more preamp distortion to your sound, taking distortion to the extreme with borderline fuzz qualities. There is also a MIX dial, where you can control exactly how much of the drive processing will be present in your signal. At 100%, you’ll hear all of the processing and none of the original signal.
Expertly crafted impulse responses
Careful not to provide too many options, Mammoth features three impulse responses to choose between. Captured using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, a 6x10, 4x12 and 8x10 cabinet are included. Perfect for finding the right overall frequency response shape of your signal, this can be used to focus the midrange with smaller speakers or enhance the low-end using the larger 8x10 impulse.
For many modern producers and players, they will have their own collection of impulses. For this, AuroraDSP has included the ability to load your own impulse response. Each speaker that's included and your custom impulse can be monitored in Solo to hear only the sound of the speaker whilst the remainder of Mammoth is muted.
The secret sauce
Located discreetly in the middle of the plug-in, a special dial awaits discovery. By clicking and turning this dial up, you'll unlock the hidden feature – a powerful tool for achieving a more aggressive and transparent tone. Use it with caution! Besides this unique dial, you'll find an "HQ" button that, when activated, ensures Mammoth operates at its maximum quality. Remember to enable this feature when finalizing your tracks with Mammoth for optimal results.
Getting the perfect level
A necessary production technique in distorted bass tones for aggressive musical genres, Mammoth features a SLAM control. This blends limiting and compression to create consistent volume levels during your performance across every string and fret, creating a uniform level and foundation for your tracks.
With so much distortion and compression being applied to your signal, it can often jump in volume level and cause unwanted digital clipping in your output stage. Simply use the Output fader to pull your volume back to a suitable level for your mix.
Dive into searing bass tones
Designed to be intuitive enough for any user to find the perfect distorted bass tone, Mammoth features a streamlined layout and cleverly-labelled sections. Should you want a starting point or to gain inspiration to hear the vast range of tones available in Mammoth, several artists presets are included, including some from Kristian Kohle.
