Doepfer A-143-3 Quad LFO (14HP) Overview

The Doepfer A-143-3 Quad LFO is a four-fold modulation oscillator module designed to be a simple but effective modulation tool in your Eurorack system. Consisting of four simple LFO units, the A-143-3 features three separate waveform outputs for each section, as well as a control for the frequency range, and a 3-way switch for selecting mid, low, or high frequency range options. The outputs provide you with triangle, rectangle, and rising sawtooth sources, with the sawtooth frequency output being twice the frequency of the other two outputs. The switch allows you to span from roughly two cycles per minute at the lowest settings, all the way up to moderate audio frequencies around 5kHz at its highest.

Usage Examples

LFO modules are incredibly diverse, and can be used to create a wide array of different modulations:

  • VCO Pitch/Frequency Modulation: Pitch/frequency modulation of a VCO produces vibrato
  • VCO Pulse Width Modulation: Pulse width modulation (PWM) of a VCO produces cyclical variation in the tone colour (similar sound to phasing)
  • VCA Loudness Modulation: Modulation of the gain of a VCA produces tremolo
  • VCF Frequency Or Resonance Modulation: Modulation of the cutoff frequency of a VCF produces cyclical variation in tone colour. For some filters, modulating the resonance is also possible
  • VCP Phase Shift Modulation: Phase shift modulation of a phaser produces cyclic phasings or phase vibrato

In principle, any CV input can be controlled by an LFO to modulate the parameter in question. A special application of a Quad LFO is the simultaneous modulation of several parameters of the same module.

Controls & Indicators

The controls are the same for each sub-unit/LFO.

  • Frequency Range Control Knob: Control knob for manual adjustment of the LFO frequency within the frequency range set by the range switch
  • Frequency Range 3-Way Switch: 3-way switch for selecting your desired frequency range:
    • L (Low): Minimum of around 2 cycles per minute
    • M (Medium): Normal LFO frequency range
    • H (High): Moderate audio range with a maximum of around 5kHz
  • LED: Displays the triangle signal that appears at the Triangle Output socket

Inputs/Outputs

The outputs are the same for each sub-unit/LFO.

  • Triangle Output: Output for the triangle wave, with a frequency displayed via the LED above the output. The output is symmetrical around 0V, the level is roughly +/-7V
  • Rectangle Output: Output for the square/rectangle wave. The output is symmetrical around 0V, the level is roughly +/-6V
  • Rising Sawtooth Output: Output for the sawtooth wave. The output is symmetrical around 0V, the level is roughly +/-7V. To obtain an inverted sawtooth, a separate voltage inverter module such as the Doepfer A-175 may be used
