The secret of the pros
The worst-kept secret in music production is the power of distortion within a mix. Used as a creative effect, you can alter the sound of your vocals, drums, guitars and more to have more aggression and impact or when used subtly, you can soften transients and add harmonic saturation to sit within your mix with ease. RP-Distort 2 doesn't narrow you down to one sound but instead offers 52 unique distortion types to add subtle sonic flavour or a heavy creative touch to your productions.
Virtually unparalleled in terms of versatility, RP-Distort 2 offers 'conventional' distortion types including fuzz, hard distortion, saturation as well as more experimental tones such as multi-band distortion, amplifier and cabinet simulation, as well as the newly introduced wave-shaping distortion.
Wave-shaping distortion includes a dual wave-shaper mode, enabling you to draw in customised waveshapes while blending between both of them simultaneously. Ideal for contemporary sound designers, RP-Distort 2 delivers unrestricted audio manipulation whether you're looking for a subtle harmonic boost to a cinematic pad or looking to rectify your audio based on an audio enveloper with expansive LFO movement, it's all possible.
Introduce chaos with Disrupt slider
Unquestionably, the most unique section about RP-Distort 2 is the Disrupter section. Presented by a spinning sphere, the Disrupt parameter offers a new experience to the classic distortion effect. An innovative section, Disrupt aims to change the way that distortion can be utilised within a production. The spherical slider can be connected to various delay parameters, allowing you to morph and evolve your distortion characteristic in a highly dynamic and creative way. Everything from chaotic adjustments of filtering, distortion level or even stereo widening ensures that no matter what your source tone is, RP-Distort 2 will be able to take it to a new plane to spark interest from your listeners.
There are several ways in which you can perform with your Disrupt slider. Clicking in various places or dragging the sphere between the axis offer manual control over your morphing, whilst a 'Lazy Mode' allows you to take a back seat and let RP-Distort 2 automatically move your position. Packaged in a tempo-synced format, Rob Papen RP-Distort 2 offers you the ability to select the Spring return of your sphere back to a neutral position based on the tempo of your song to always remain on the beat.
Newly introduced for RP-Distort 2 is the 'Audio Follower' mode that lets the plug-in automatically take control of the Disrupt sphere parameters. Using your audio input as a trigger, you can set a target threshold and connect this to a parameter within the plug-in, allowing RP-Distort 2 to create automated and musical distortion modulation.
Tailor your signal path
Crucial for creating the perfect distortion character that works within the context of your mix is getting the signal flow right. With up to 24 unique signal paths to choose from, you can customise the flow of each module within RP-Distort 2. Experiment with different positionings to unlock creative combinations that get your music heard above the rest. Filter into your distortion, or place your chorus first in the signal path, you never know what might work for your production.
More than meets the eye
Much more than a simple distortion plug-in, RP-Distort 2 is your one-stop sound design plug-in, comprised of 52 unique distortion types, two compressors, filter, stereo widening, chorus and much more. Presented in four independent modules, RP-Distort 2 lets you customise your audio in virtually endless different ways. Aside from the main distortion module, RP-Distort 2 features a dynamic gate to remove any excessive unwanted noise from your signal as well as an analog-modelled filter section with zero-delay filters, two compressor types that offer logarithmic and linear modes and a stereo widening section with vintage chorus effect.
New to RP-Distort 2 is the four-band graphic EQ section. Expanding on previous outings, RP-Distort 2 features a four-band graphic EQ that can be placed both pre and post distortion. Setting the EQ to pre-effect, you can tailor the sound of your signal going into the distortion module, altering the character and response of the type of distortion to produce different results. Placing it after enables you to boost or cut frequencies to carve a space to sit within your mix. Of course, the original four-band EQ is also included for familiarity.
Discover exciting sound design with modulation
Where other plug-ins offer a simple distortion algorithm, Rob Papen likes to take it one step further. At the bottom of the plug-in, you will find a very handy modulation matrix that allows you to add unpredictability and instability to your sound. The modulation matrix features four sources that can be assigned freely to any of the parameters within the plug-in, offering almost limitless creative potential. Four tempo-synced LFOs are also available with adjustable waveshape and speed and can be mapped to any parameter. Dynamic and evolving distortion character that moves with your music or erratic and frantic gating and stereo widening are all possible using the onboard modulation.
