The MK 8 is the perfect large diaphragm condenser for a vast array of recording applications. Vocals, instruments, drums and percussion, and ambient room-miking - the flexibility of the MK 8's design lets you record exactly the way you want to. A choice of five individual polar patterns can be selected on the fly.
Cardioid and Supercardioid patterns are perfect for isolating your sound source whilst rejecting ambient noise and other sounds from behind the microphone. If you want to pick up a slightly larger sound source, or a small amount of off-axis audio, you can switch to the Wide Cardioid option. With Omnidirectional selected, you can pick up sound in a 360° radius, capturing sound with natural and open results, perfect for acoustic instrumentation, wide sound sources such as orchestras or choirs, or capturing the sound of your room. Finally, there's Figure-of-Eight. This unique polar pattern captures sound directly in front of and behind your microphone, rejecting sound from the sides. This is perfect for vocal and instrumental duets, or for achieving an extremely wide stereo image - ideal for use as a drum overhead or for miking up orchestral groups.
The versatility of the MK 8 doesn't stop there though. This powerful condenser also features a low-cut/roll-off switch with three options. The first is the Linear selection. This simply bypasses the low-cut circuitry, having no effect on the low-frequencies that you capture. The second is the Roll-Off option, providing you with a -6dB/Oct slope from 100Hz downwards. This is perfect for dealing with the proximity effect that can occur when close-miking certain instruments and sound sources.
Finally, there's the Low-Cut option, giving you a -18dB/Oct cut at 60Hz and below. This eliminates any low-frequency noise and rumble, or certain impact sounds. On top of all of this, there's also an attenuation switch with 0dB, -10dB, and -20dB options. Setting this switch to -10dB or -20dB gives you the potential to record higher sound pressure levels, whilst the -20dB option also reduces the output gain to avoid overloading your microphone amplifiers. So if you're looking for a powerful condenser that can handle almost anything you throw at it, the MK 8 is the perfect choice.
