Key Features
The Strymon Deco Plugin is a remarkably accurate and authentic tape machine plug-in which recreates the studio workflow of classic tape machines. It goes beyond just offering their sonic signature, delving into the forgotten art of manipulating these decks in the studio. Where other plugins may emulate tape machines, the Deco plugin stands out as the only software that accurately replicates the timed/speed relationship between two tape decks working in tandem. This crucial relationship creates the phasing, true tape flanging, chorus, echo, and double tracking effects that were used in iconic early tracks recorded at studios like Sun Studios and Abbey Road. Now, all these effects are available in one easy-to-use and incredibly convincing plugin.
Deco consists of two distinct sides that combine to create a dynamic studio workflow. The Doubletracker side controls two interactive tape decks, allowing you to achieve a wide range of stunning effects. From psychedelic tape flanging to syrupy slapback tape echoes, you have the power to shape your sound by varying the timing relationship between the Reference and Lag decks. It's old-school craftsmanship at your fingertips. On the other side, the Tape Saturation feature smooths out your tracks with the familiar compression and saturation of tape, adding a touch of warmth and richness. If you crave a more distinct sound, the Tape Saturation side also offers subtle or not-so-subtle tape-driven overdrive, giving your music a fat and vibrant character.

From psychedelic tape flanging to gorgeous tape chorusing, syrupy slapback tape echoes, and everything in between, Deco opens up a world of sonic possibilities. By varying the timing relationship between the Reference and Lag decks, you can easily achieve the vintage sound that made tape so iconic. Whether you want to add a touch of nostalgia or push the boundaries of creativity, Deco's Doubletracker is the tool you need.
Experience the smoothness and warmth of analog tape with Deco's Tape Saturation side. This feature allows you to give your tracks the rich qualities of vintage tape machines. With familiar tape compression and saturation, Deco can add depth and character to your audio. The plugin's harmonically rich low-end and reduced high-frequency spikes create a pleasing and balanced sound. Engineers used to say that "everything sounds better on tape," and now you can bring that legendary sound to your music. Whether you want to add subtle saturation and compression or crank up the saturation for tape-style transparent overdrive, Deco's Tape Saturation side has you covered.
Deco's Tape Saturation side offers a wide range of controls to help you achieve your desired sound. The Saturation control allows you to dial in everything from light and transparent saturation to smooth and overdriven tape distortion. With an adjustable Volume control, you can balance the final output to ensure your mix is just right. The dedicated Tone knob lets you adjust the frequency response from darker to brighter, giving you even more control over the tone of your tracks. The Voice switch offers two settings - Classic and Cassette - each providing its own unique characteristics. The Classic setting replicates the response and saturation of professional reel-to-reel tape machines, while the Cassette setting emulates the fat and musically compressed tone of high-end cassette tape recorders from the '70s.
Deco's Doubletracker controls allow you to intensify and widen your tracks with ease. The Lag Time control is the key to achieving mind-bending tape flanging, spacious doubletrack chorusing, and classic slapback tape echo effects. By adjusting the Lag Time, you can create a wide variety of tape-based effects, from subtle movement to extreme undulations. The Blend control lets you set the mix level between Deco's Reference and Lag Decks, giving you control over the doubletracking effect. The Wobble knob adds random tape speed-based modulations to the Lag Deck, allowing you to add depth and movement to your sound. Whether you're looking to create a vintage vibe or push the boundaries of creativity, Deco's Doubletracker controls have you covered.
Deco's Wide Stereo feature allows you to create a wider stereo image for your tracks. By sending the mono input to both the left and right channels, Deco creates an adjustable stereo spread. The Blend control acts as a pan control, allowing you to adjust the relative levels of the two tape decks. This broadens and intensifies the impact of your tracks in the stereo field, adding depth and dimension to your mix. Whether you want to create a wide, immersive sound or add a touch of spaciousness, Deco's Wide Stereo mode is a powerful tool.
With Deco's Auto Flange feature, you can achieve a recording studio-inspired through-zero flange effect with a click of a button. This engages a "virtual audio engineer" who dynamically adjusts the faders and tape reels to create a smooth and predictable through-zero flange experience. By adding this effect to your tracks, you can take your sound to new heights and add a touch of vintage charm.
Deco's Studio Mode provides an additional 10dB of headroom for use in your digital audio workstation. This default setting ensures that your mixes have plenty of room to breathe, allowing you to achieve optimal levels without any unwanted distortion. With Studio Mode enabled you can trust that Deco will deliver pristine sound quality and professional-grade results.
