Key Features
The zplane TONIC is an automated key and scale detection plug-in. Powered by the latest zplane AI technology, TONIC analyses your incoming audio and listens to the musical content to find the scales and chords embedded in the music. Unlike other detection tools which provide you with a single result for the key and scale which can often be incorrect, TONIC provides you with three potential keys for your audio, each with its own probability rating to greatly increase the chances of finding compatible chords and scales - and all of this is done in real-time!
Employing a graphical keyboard on the main interface, TONIC provides you with guidance on pitches that fit within the scale and key to let you easily create melodies around these notes. Not only can you see the pitches that fit the selected key, but you can also audition and check the results by clicking the various pitches and hearing them in context with the audio being analyzed.

TONIC understands that music is complex and sometimes more than one key can fit the audio. With its unique three-point probability display, TONIC shows three possible keys, allowing you to see and compare multiple possibilities. The shaded areas around the centre circular display indicate the probability for each key, with the top key being the most likely match. This feature is especially helpful when the key of a piece of music isn't obvious due to unused notes or unconventional scales. For those who struggle to determine basic keys by ear, TONIC proves to be an invaluable tool for working with samples, loops, or remixes, offering an inexpensive and easy-to-use solution.
TONIC helps you validate the key and learn its scale quickly with the Fold Keys feature. By hiding all but the correct notes for the selected key, you can focus on what's important. The Keyboard View, accessible at the bottom of the GUI, highlights the suggested scale notes (always seven) on a virtual keyboard. You can click on these notes to play them using the internal synth, ensuring they fit perfectly. TONIC even lets you replay suggested notes or trigger one-finger triad chords that align with the scale.
Discover the various chords that perfectly fit the selected key with TONIC's Chords mode. By enabling this mode, seven compatible chords are placed on single keys, allowing you to experiment with different combinations to find the perfect match for your song. The Fold Keys button hides non-chord notes, further simplifying your workflow. If the suggested chords don't fit, you can easily switch to one of the other two suggested keys to see if they work better.
