Looking to darken your sound? The Chedeville Umbra Bb clarinet mouthpiece F1 is the mouthpiece you've been looking for. Made to the same extreme standards as other Chedeville mouthpieces, the Umbra mouthpiece is guaranteed to leave you impressed.
By working closely with the esteemed clarinettist Milan Rericha (the co-founder of RZ Clarinets) the Umbra model was born. He simply wanted a mouthpiece like the popular Elite model, but with a darker tone. By retaining the inner shape of the Elite but changing the bore and chamber, the Umbra produces a very free blowing feel alongside a dark tone.
By reverse engineering a famous Chedeville "blank", Chedeville have been able to replicate pre World War II legendary Chedeville rubber. Once combined with the classic Chedeville facing curve, you will realise that the Umbra clarinet mouthpiece produces a tone that is unsurpassed.

The Umbra journey started back in 2019 where Jody Espina met Milan Rericha at Clarinet Fest. Coincidently, the Chedeville booth was opposite the RZ Clarinet Clarinet booth which Milan is the owner. After trying the Elite mouthpiece, Milan instantly fell in love with Chedeville and a long-lasting musical relationship was born.
Sometime later, Milan called Jody expressing his love for the Elite, but wanted to make some alterations - mostly to make a darker tone. Jody rose to the challenge, and after some back and forth testing, Jody finally produced the clarinet mouthpiece that Milan was dreaming of. Finally, the Umbra was formed.
The secret to excellence starts with the material - Chedeville rubber. To ensure that the new rubber is identical to original Chedeville mouthpieces, Chedeville needed to reverse engineer the rubber. They did this by analysing legendary pre World War II mouthpieces by using some of the most advanced forms of digital scanning. By doing this, they can be 100% sure of the chemical makeup, and therefore be assured that they were starting with a true Chedeville "blank". Often copied, but never equalled, if you don’t see the symbol CHR on the mouthpiece, then it does not have Chedeville rubber.
In 2018 Jody Espina, President and Founder of JodyJazz Inc, purchased Chedeville from Dr Omar Henderson. Omar's goal was to recreate the sound of the original Chedeville mouthpieces made before World War II. He amazingly achieved his goal of duplicating the Chedeville Rubber after extensive research, scientific study, and prototyping in the lab. By using state of the art design techniques with the use of 3D modelling and CNC multi-axis machines, all Chedeville mouthpieces are crafted to the highest quality and then finished by hand.
