Softer reeds are often easier to gently through - they speak more easily and produce a bright sound. Harder reeds produce a darker and louder sound, however, they are harder to blow through and often need a well-developed embouchure to get the most out of them. They are great for high register playing though. There's no right or wrong reed strength, it's all about what works best for you - so experiment and you'll find the right one.
