Classic German craftsmanship
Founded in 1925, GEWA has a rich history in the production of bows and stringed instruments. You can put your faith in their ability to deliver a meticulously well-constructed viola outfit, drawing on their impressive heritage and using traditional materials and expert craftsmen. GEWA is known for producing instruments with excellent tone, projection, and response - instruments which are heavenly to play and sensational to listen to.
Traditional materials
The Allegro Viola is built using conventional tonewoods, giving it a vintage sound and a timeless look. European maple is selected for the back and sides of the body. This wood has excellent resonance, which gives the instrument fantastic projection and a wide dynamic range. The soundboard of the viola is hewn from European spruce, a traditional tonewood used in the finest violins. The maple and spruce combination is the same as what was used by Stradivari and his Cremonese contemporaries in the 17th-18th centuries.
The fingerboard, chin rest, pegs, and end pins are all made from ebony. This gorgeous wood has a naturally smooth, luscious finish, which makes for a sublime playing experience. The natural strength of ebony increases the durability of the Allegro viola, and the black colouring adds to the classic styling. The instrument is hand-varnished with a red-brown wood polish, giving the whole instrument a magnificent shine and bringing out the natural beauty of the tiger-like grain of the maple wood on the back.
Ready to play
The Allegro Viola arrives ready setup, letting you play it straight out of the box. An original French-made Aubert bridge is aligned perfectly to transfer reverberations to the body and to give you a highly playable action. The viola is strung with premium Thomastik-Infeld Alphayue strings from Austria, which provide a warm, rich tone. The German-made Wittner fine-tuning tailpiece holds tunings excellently, and is expertly fitted to the viola to ensure no unwanted buzzing or vibrations can occur.
Everything you need
This viola outfit includes a GEWA bulletwood bow and a shaped instrument case. The bow is finely crafted using a perfectly weighted massaranduba stick, natural horsehair and a traditional ebony frog. The careful balance of the bow gives it excellent response and control, allowing you to glide effortlessly across the strings of your new viola. The GEWA shaped viola case is designed to stand up to the inevitable bangs and knocks which face an instrument which sees regular use. Lightweight yet sturdy, it’s absolutely perfect for the musician on the move.
