Key Features
The JodyJazz HR* Custom Dark Baritone Saxophone Mouthpiece is the perfect mouthpiece for musicians seeking a dark and traditional tone. And thanks to so many sizes being available, there's a perfect Custom mouthpiece for you. What really makes the Custom Dark mouthpiece stand out is the material - Chedeville rubber. This legendary rubber offers a tone which radiates a sense of purity and density which current mouthpieces can't replicate. The rubber combined with the rounded sidewalls and large open round chamber produces the darkest sounding mouthpiece in the JodyJazz range.
Around the shank of the mouthpiece you will find a heavy stylised ring. This extra weight boosts the body of the tone and increases the harmonics. As with all JodyJazz mouthpieces, each HR* Custom Dark is individually play tested to maintain the highest consistency and quality. This mouthpiece has a size 6 tip opening. Perfect for both jazz and classical players, this size opening balances being relatively easy to blow through and having precise intonation with wider expressive capabilities such as bending.

The secret to excellence starts with the material - Chedeville rubber. To ensure that the new rubber is identical to original Chedeville mouthpieces, JodyJazz needed to reverse engineer the rubber. They did this by analysing legendary pre World War II mouthpieces by using some of the most advanced forms of digital scanning. By doing this, they can be certain of the chemical makeup, and therefore be assured that they were starting with a true Chedeville "blank". Often copied, but never equalled, if you don’t see the symbol CHR on the mouthpiece, then it does not have Chedeville rubber.
JodyJazz have developed these reeds to enhance the tone of the Baritone Saxophone while also allowing the instrument to cut through and still be heard in the mix. They have managed to retain the clarity of the mid registers while reducing the higher frequencies. This has been achieved by designing a rollover baffle which gives good feedback to the player while making a large chamber and bore to give a mellow and warm tone. The chamber features rounded side walls which add complexity to the sound, and the heavy gold-plate brass band around the shank boosts the harmonics in the sound.
JodyJazz was founded by Jody Espina and has grown to be one of the leading designers and producers of mouthpieces for saxophones and clarinets. With the use of 3D modelling and crafted using CNC multi-axis machines, the mouthpieces are finished by hand and play tested by Jody Espina or by another professional saxophonist. This ensures that each mouthpiece has a perfect seal with the reed and that it responds accurately throughout the range of the saxophone.
