The mouthpiece to beat
If you're a lover of the saxophone, there's a very good chance you've heard of the Selmer S80. Tuned to deliver warm characteristic alongside a broad tone, the S80 is perfect for saxophonists wanting to take classical performance more seriously.
Since its creation in the 1970s, the S80 has become the industry standard classical mouthpiece. Still to this day, many saxophone enthusiasts compare new and contemporary mouthpieces to the S80 - simply because everyone knows, and love it.
Time for an upgrade?
If you've just purchased your first saxophone, there's a good chance the included mouthpiece will bottleneck your musical development. These cheap factory mouthpieces are made without care and attention, and can often sound lifeless.
This is why teachers and specialists have been recommending the Selmer S80 as a "first professional mouthpiece" to students since its creation in the 70s. From the moment you play your first note, you'll notice how easily the mouthpiece speaks across all registers. It really does take the stress out of recitals, and lets you concentrate on what matters - the music.
Iconic saxophone sound
You don't get a mouthpiece this good without some serious TLC. All S80 mouthpieces start as a rod of hard rubber. This some-what mundane material is then expertly milled in France to give shape to this Selmer classic. Once milled, each and every mouthpiece is finished by hand to guarantee stability and accuracy, while maintaining consistent facings. This way you can buy your S80 knowing it's ready to play straight out of the box.
When designing the S80, Selmer wanted a mouthpiece with all the nuanced characteristics of a classical mouthpiece, but with slightly more top-end and projection. After plenty of experimenting, they finally settled on one of their most unique designs - the square chamber. When playing the S80, you'll quickly find that this uncommon shape produces a silky smooth and refined tone, but most importantly, has the potential to project across an ensemble.
