The Custom Z is the result of a long partnership between Yamaha and American jazz legend Bobby Shew. Mr. Shew has been active on the jazz scene since the 1960's, having played trumpet with the Woody Herman and Buddy Rich big bands. He went on to be an incredibly popular session musician in Los Angeles and led the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra.
Noted for his fluid and instinctive improvisational style, Mr. Shew sought a trumpet with slick playability and gutsy projection, but also a rich tone and expressive abilities at the soft end of the dynamic range. His unique input, paired with the knowhow of Yamaha's best brass engineers, has resulted in a versatile, top-class trumpet.
A bright and vivid tone is achieved with the one-piece yellow-brass bell. A side seam runs along the bell, meeting the points where tubing braces dampen vibrations, giving the instrument an open resonance and improving its projection. A French Bead is also applied to the bell - an advanced technique which results in a flat-domed rim shape, instead of a traditional round bell rim. This improves the feedback of sound to the performer.
The one-piece valve casing of a conventional trumpet has been replaced with a two-piece design. This allows a much more powerful, well-defined tone, and balances out playing resistance. The piston pads and leadpipe have also been redesigned in order to increase smooth playability during complex passages. The end result is an instrument that can effortlessly go from quiet to loud, with incredibly slick movement on the valves.
The Custom Z comes included with a Yamaha TR-SHEW-JAZZ mouthpiece. This jazz-style mouthpiece has a deep, roomy cup which provides a big, warm sound. The back bore and throat are designed to provide enough 'jump and snap' to be able to deftly negotiate quick jazz passages with rich, full tone. Also included is a professional-quality Yamaha trumpet case. This sturdy construction is designed to protect your instrument from bangs and scrapes. Its compact size is perfectly suited for carry-on luggage, making it ideal for a musician on the move.
