Key Features
The Yamaha YTR9335 Custom Series, Xeno Artist Model 'Chicago' Trumpet is part of the second generation of the Xeno Artist Model 'Chicago' series. Developed in collaboration with John Hagstrom and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Yamaha trumpet designers completely re-examined and re-imagined their process for the design and manufacture of parts. Famous vintage trumpets owned by the CSO were used as benchmarks throughout the development. These classic instruments were studied in detail in order to distil the qualities that make them play so beautifully into a modern design.
The result is this, a true professional's trumpet. With a litany of new design features devised to provide the performer with perfect playing resistance and unparalleled evenness of tone, this instrument has been designed from the bottom up for use in top ensembles. Developed by professional musicians, for professional musicians - the YTR9335 is a trumpet for the performer that strives for perfection.

Yamaha Xeno Artist Model series instruments are designed in collaboration with leading orchestral musicians. For this Chicago model, Yamaha approached the American trumpeter, John Hagstrom. Mr. Hagstrom has been a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's famed trumpet section since 1996. Before this, he had held the position of principal trumpet with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, and also with "The President's Own" United States Marine Band in Washington DC.
His professional advice was considered at every stage of the design process, resulting in an instrument perfectly suited to orchestral playing. The available variety in tone and expression at both ends of the dynamic range allow the trumpet to seamlessly blend into brass sections, or effortlessly cut through the orchestra during solo passages.
Combining a leadpipe that is slightly thicker than usual, a shallower mouthpiece receiver, and an original style Malone Pipe, Yamaha have attained a richer tone and an improved response, whilst achieving an ideal blowing resistance for the performer. Bob Malone - originally a trumpet player himself - opened a custom brass shop in Los Angeles in 1983. His original leadpipe design was widely acclaimed and caused trumpeters at the time to throng his shop to have him customise their instruments personally. His designs now retain huge popularity amongst modern musicians due to their brilliant tone and projection.
After Malone joined Yamaha's Research and Development team in 2001, his leadpipe designs have made their way into a number of Custom series instruments and Xeno Artist models. Offering incredible responsiveness and intonation, this unique leadpipe design elevates the playability of the YTR9335 enormously.
The design of the bell on this instrument gets narrower towards the valve casing, which, combined with a square-cornered bell bow, gives a much more balanced resistance to the player. A French bead is also applied to the bell - an advanced technique which matches the curl of the bell's rim to the shape of a semi-cylindrical rim. This improves the feedback of sound to the performer.
Following the research of vintage trumpet models, Yamaha's new findings led them to refine the dimensions and the thickness of the valve casing and pistons for the YTR9335, delivering an improved response and allowing greater clarity when playing complex passages. The lightweight pistons are optimised for playability and comfort, making this an instrument you'll be happy to use during long sessions.
Modifications to the designs of the first and third valve slides increase the ease with which you can achieve correct intonation. The resistance of the third valve slide has been tweaked in order to increase playability and comfort by using a quarter circle stopper ring and by adding a button to the tip of the slide. The stopper for the third valve slide is positioned to allow the slide to be hyperextended, which allows consistent accurate sounding of the low Eb note. Additionally, a metal brace has been added to the first valve slide, adding stronger focus to the core of the instrument's tone.
The YTR9335 comes included with a premium professional-quality TRC-800E double trumpet case. This sturdy backpack-style case is made from black artificial leather, and has room for two trumpets, or for a single trumpet plus mutes and other accessories. An outside pocket provides space for books and sheet music, and the entire case is perfectly suited for carry-on luggage, making it ideal for a professional musician on the move.
