With its 6-ply birch shells and a pristine interior and exterior finish, the Recording Custom delivers a sound that seems ''pre-EQ'd'' – perfect for studio and performance. These shells are fitted with re-designed hi-tension lugs that are weighted to enhance lower frequencies. This results in an easy-to-use and easy-to-tune drum kit that re-defines the classic drum sound.

The 6-ply birch shells offer exceptional projection, capable of punching through even the loudest of mixes. Additionally, birch shells are renowned for reducing unwanted noise and preventing interference when drums are set up side-by-side. The unique sonic characteristics of birch wood ensure that each stroke is clearly delineated, making it widely considered to be the ideal choice for recording environments.
Birch shells also produce a lower fundamental tone than maple. Their crisp sound quality with short attack decay makes them perfect for recording situations. Yamaha’s Air Seal System features birch wood cut in plies, positioned with staggered diagonal seams, and sealed together with evenly distributed air pressure. This process ensures that every drum shell is in round and of uniform thickness while providing superior tone quality and durability.
The Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System (YESS) allows the attachment of the drum to the tom holder without then need of a hole in the drum shell for the rod to pass through. The YESS clamp is attached to the shell at the nodal point – the location with the least amount of vibration, providing minimal effect to the resonance of the shell.
This is attached with two bolts, allowing the shell to vibrate freely, without degrading the shell’s dynamic range or sustain.
After thorough testing, Steve Gadd opted for 30-degree bearing edges for the Recording Custom shells. These bearing edges deliver a sharp response with a wide tuning range. They also provide quick and easy tuning and drum head changes and respond perfectly well to a range of drum head choices.
The new Recording Custom design retains the traditional essence of the Recording Custom. To maximise the attenuating properties of the birch wood, Yamaha increased the weight of the lug to further enhance the artists expressive power and reduce undesirable noise from the shell. This ensures optimum sustain for the core sound, producing a crisp, articulate tones.
Lifting the bass drum slightly reduces interference from the floor and maximises the resonance of the shell. This produces a more punchy sound and accentuates the natural sound produces in the core of the shell.
The Recording Custom is one of the most recording drum series in history. It has an unparalleled history of success and innovation, constantly setting the bar high for studio-quality drum kits.
Working with the legendary drummer Steve Gadd, Yamaha have elevated the iconic Recording Custom Series with a new design and features. These additions produce a refined, focused sound with an enhanced, rounded, and deeper tone.
