Improved processes for accurate weight and tone
Drumstick choice is a personal thing. Yet, even once you've found the ideal size, weight, material and tip shape for your playing style, the unpredictability of wood itself often leads to inconsistencies which can make supposedly 'identical' sticks feel wildly different. With this in mind, Meinl took their production line back to the drawing board.
Before sticks are milled into their final form, they're cut into identically-sized square dowels. Meinl inserted an extra step into their process at this point, measuring the weight and density of the raw dowel pieces, sorting them, and allocating each individual piece of wood to the stick model it was born to become. Because of this, the weight and density range of each stick size is dramatically reduced, so you know that when you pick up a pair of Hybrid 7As, they'll feel - and sound - exactly like every other pair you've owned.
Hybrid tip shaping
Plan for the tone you want. With such a huge range of drums, heads, and cymbals on the market, the shape of your drumstick's wooden tip isn't something many of us consider when we're trying to find that dream tone. But, as anyone who's had to borrow an unfamiliar pair of sticks will tell you - it can make a huge difference.
Luckily, Meinl has done the research for us, and come up with a range of tip options specifically tailored to achieve certain tonal characteristics. The 'Hybrid' tip takes the shape of a traditional, acorn-tip, and shortens it to the length of a barrel tip. The effect is striking - a darker, warmer tone with a smooth attack that enhances the mid frequencies of cymbals and drums alike. If that's the sound you're after, why not start at the source - the drumsticks in your hands.
