The broad side of the microphone is the front whilst the curved side is the back. For the greatest capture ensure that the broad side is directly facing your source. Positioning the crossfade knob all the way to the left hand side means the microphone will be capturing sound only from capsule 1 (supercardioid), whilst positioning the knob all the way to the right will pick-up sound from capsule 2 (cardioid), you'll be able to adjust these with varying degrees to achieve the perfect tonal balance between the two.
