Analogue Systems RS-500e EMS Filter (12HP) Overview
The Analogue Systems RS-500e EMS Filter is an officially licensed remake of the EMS low-pass filter with variable resonance. The RS-500e offers 2 CV response modes, allowing to switch between to gather the desired sound. CV Slew Fast provides rapid cutoff frequency, ideal for percussive, snappy sounds, whereas CV Slew Slow is ideal for recreating bubbling and warbling effects. The RS-500e shares the same principle sonic characteristics produced by the filters of EMS synthesizers. Additionally, the RS-500e EMS Filter features changeable filter slopes, which are EMS pre-1974 and post-1974, both offering different characteristics depending on the type of sound you want. The RS-500e is a low-pass filter based on the original EMS VSC3 and portable Synthi AKS synthesizers from the early '70s. They have kept the circuitry as close to the original as possible, to ensure the filter retains the same characteristics. However, Analogue Systems have added a few updates and controls that were not available on the original. The RS-500e now features voltage control of response (resonance), allowing you to use CV to control the resonance. The RS-500e now allows the cutoff frequencies to respond more rapidly, now allowing you to create snappy, percussive sounds. The RS-500e offers the ability to switch between different octave filter slopes. You can change between 18dB/octave and 24dB/octave slopes, resulting in different sounds.
Switchable Cutoff Frequency Slew & Filter Slope
The Analogue Systems RS-500e offers 2 CV response modes, allowing you to switch between depending on the type of sound you want. In CV Slew Slow mode the filter will respond slowly to rapid changes in incoming CVs, which is ideal for creating bubbling and warbling effects that early VCS3s and Synthis were famous for. Switching to CV Slew Fast makes the filter more responsive and snappy, which is ideal for creating snappy, percussive sounds. With the RS-500e you can also change the filter slope to Pre-1974 and Post-1974. This essentially alters the way in which the upper frequencies are removed from an audio signal passing through the device. In Pre-1974 mode, the module uses a 18dB/oct filter slope, recreating the sound of EMS synthesizers built before 1974, whereas in Post-1974 mode, the module uses a 24dB/oct slope, recreating the sound of EMS synthesizers built from 1974 onwards.
