Bionic sustain resynthesis
Zynaptiq has produced a new type of reverb for Adaptiverb. Utilising artificial intelligence within a 'bionic sustain resynthesizer', Adaptiverb synthesizes a reverb tail using a network of hundreds of oscillators that learn to recreate the pitched and harmonic parts of an input sound. The resulting reverb tail is free of any harshness, noise or transients and features no inherent resonant frequencies of its own to seamlessly blend with the source signal.
Rather than simulating a room, Adaptiverb is developed with a focus on producing its own depth, harmonic richness and sustain. This is a method that ultimately produces unique sounding reverb tails with a fresh characteristic.
Furthermore, owing to Adpativerb's unique machine learning process your reverb tail is always in tune with the input or a user-defined set of pitches and even goes on to filter out unwanted harmonic content automatically. So when you change notes chords, or tonal quality Adaptiverb seamlessly develops to remain comfortably within your mix.
Because of the inherent qualities of Adaptiverb's machine learning-based reverb, it is perfect for working with difficult material that features lots of unwanted noise such as the master bus or field recordings.
Pitch processing and synthesis parameters
Because Adaptiverb is uniquely built on a series of oscillators the resultant timbre of the produced reverb tail can be tweaked for subtle to dramatic effects, and thus Zynatpiq has packaged Adaptiverb with a comprehensive range of pitch processing and synthesis parameters to give you complete control.
'Simplify' reduces the number of oscillators incrementally through hundreds down to one to simply the timbre and produce a distinct character that is similar to that of additive synthesizers.
'Richness' introduces harmonics of a specified interval into the sustain synth's sound. Raising the 'richness' parameter causes oscillators within the resynthesizer to excite other oscillators that are at or close to the interval specified with 'interval'. This excitation causes a reinforcing of existing harmonics without adding new oscillators to develop an organic and blissfully harmonic sound while avoiding pitch-shifting artefacts.
'Interval' specifies the richness interval at -12, -5, +7 and +12 semitones and also feature a detune setting.
'Pitch Randomise' adds random pitch modulation to the oscillators for an ensemble style shimmer and a sense of movement and depth.
Ray tracing reverb module
Adaptiverb also comes packaged with a ray tracing reverb module to develop the reverb production with density and diffusion. Ray tracing reverb essentially works by simulating the paths soundwaves take from a virtual sound source to a virtual listening position in a 3D room model. Adaptiverb utilises AI to simulate 16,000 paths without explicitly computing individual reflections. The resulting reverb is linear across all frequencies and so perfect for diffusing the sound pre-filtered by the sustain resynthesizer and also for post-filtering using the featured harmonic contour filter.
The reverb section of Adaptiverb also comes packaged with an all-pass filter-based reverb that can be fed by the output of the sustain resynthesizer, directly from the input section or a mixture of both for a range of flexible filtering options.
Adaptiverb's reverb section is able to produce flexible, smooth and full-sounding reverb effects, and thanks to its artificial intelligence capabilities do so without running a massive burden on your CPU.
Harmonic contour filter
All of the preceding sections of Adaptiverb's powerful reverb tail synthesis engine are post-processed by the 'Harmonic Countour Filter' or 'HCF'. The HCF primarily removes dissonant pitches from the reverb tail to avoid obscuring your mix with Adaptiverb's reverb tail; for example, when a source track has a chord change the HCF will remove the pitches that would clash with the input.
The HCF also enables Adaptiverb to automatically adapt the reverb tail to blend perfectly with the source, or when applied in negative amounts suppresses common characteristics between the input and the reverb tail so that it can fill in the gaps.
Furthermore, the HCF features a hold function that allows you to freeze the current filtering effect and apply the timbral characteristics of one source to the reverb of another, for cross-filtering effects evocative of convolution.
Finally, the HCF can be used to selectively conform the reverb tail to a specific set of pitches under the control of a virtual keyboard.
Reviews
"There’s only a handful of audio developers who always think outside of the box – and Zynaptiq is one of them.
ADAPTIVERB sounds so deep and three-dimensional. Showing the same lateral, incredibly creative thinking as their other products, it creates its own sound and personality – instead of emulating a piece of vintage gear or real physical space." - Rik Simpson, aka Rikademus
"ADAPTIVERB is simply the most unique reverb out there, and a completely different way of thinking about reverb. It can transform sounds and take them to a new place. It totally made one of the songs on the new Tycho album." - Mikael Eldridge, aka Count
