New and improved developments improve playability and note production. Updated for the first time in 12 years, the new design offers a better tonal definition. The latest YFH-8310Z flugel horns have hollow, barrel-shaped yellow brass leadpipe screws with altered screw threads for superior handling. Additionally, there are new one-piece valve casings, offering greater precision and stability.
The YFH-8310Z is the result of a long partnership between Yamaha and American jazz legend Bobby Shew. Mr. Shew has been active on the jazz scene since the 1960s, having played the trumpet with the Woody Herman and Buddy Rich big bands. He went on to be an incredibly popular session musician in Los Angeles and led the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra.
Noted for his fluid and instinctive improvisational style, Mr. Shew sought a flugelhorn with slick playability and gutsy projection, but also a rich tone and expressive abilities at the soft end of the dynamic range. His unique input, paired with the know-how of Yamaha's best brass engineers, has resulted in a versatile, top-class flugelhorn.
Bob Malone - originally a horn player himself - opened a custom brass shop in Los Angeles in 1983. His original leadpipe design was widely acclaimed and caused trumpeters at the time to throng his shop to have him customise their instruments personally. His designs now retain huge popularity amongst modern musicians due to their brilliant tone and projection.
After Malone joined Yamaha's Research and Development team in 2001, his leadpipe designs have made their way into a number of Custom series instruments and Xeno Artist models. Offering incredible responsiveness and intonation, this unique leadpipe design elevates the playability of the YFH-8310Z enormously.
Hand-lapped slides and pistons give a perfect seal between the pistons and casing. This snug fit gives the horn much smoother airflow whilst also improving the intonation and response of the instrument. The Monel pistons are corrosion-resistant, and therefore perfect for retaining a precise fit and perfect action for many years to come. The YFH-8310Z also features a modified third valve trigger, making it far more ergonomic and accommodating of a wider range of hand sizes.
The YFH-8310Z comes included with a Yamaha SHEW-FH mouthpiece. This jazz-style mouthpiece has a deep, roomy cup that provides a big, warm sound. The backbore and throat are designed to provide enough “jump and snap” to be able to deftly negotiate quick jazz passages with rich, full tone. Also included is a professional-quality Yamaha flugelhorn case. This sturdy construction is designed to protect your instrument from bangs and scrapes. Its compact size is perfectly suited for carry-on luggage, making it ideal for a musician on the move.
