Vandoren reeds are trusted by clarinet and saxophone players for their consistent quality, rich tone, and responsive playability. Made in France from carefully selected cane, Vandoren reeds are precision-cut to ensure reliable performance across various playing styles and skill levels.
The range includes several models, each designed for specific tonal characteristics. The Traditional reeds, for example the Traditional Bb Clarinet Reed, 2 , are known for their balanced response and warm sound, making them a popular choice for classical musicians. The V12 and 56 Rue Lepic reeds offer a thicker cut for a fuller tone and enhanced control, particularly suited for orchestral and solo performance. The V21 combines elements of the V12 and Traditional designs, providing both depth and flexibility.
For jazz and contemporary styles the Java series such as the Java Red Tenor Saxophone Reeds, 2.5 are a great option.
Java Red, and ZZ reeds deliver greater projection and brightness, while the V16 is favoured for its powerful, rich sound. Vandoren also produces reeds for all saxophones and clarinets, including bass clarinet and baritone saxophone, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of instruments.
With their reputation for durability and precision, Vandoren reeds help musicians achieve a clear, expressive sound, making them a reliable choice for players at all levels.
Vandoren reeds aren’t particularly expensive compared to other reed brands. In fact they’re all around the same price point. Reeds are made from carefully selected cane and undergo rigorous quality control. The reliability, tone consistency, and durability of Vandoren reeds, make them a preferred choice for musicians worldwide, and these points are all the reason for their cost.
A box of 10 reeds should last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on usage and care. Regular players may go through a reed every few days, while occasional players may use one for weeks. Proper rotation, storage, and maintenance can extend the lifespan of each reed significantly.
2.5 reeds are generally good for beginners as they offer a balance between ease of play and sound quality. They provide enough resistance to develop embouchure strength while remaining flexible for smooth articulation. However, some beginners may start with a softer 1.5 or 2 reed for easier response.
